Field Notes

Description:

Wingspan 3 1/8 - 3 3/8" (80-85 mm). Wings above are black overlaid with metallic blue, spots of white or light blue striping the outer edges (more prominent on the hind wings) red/orange spots may or may not be visible on upper front wings. Wings below have more prominent red/orange spots.

Habitat:

Spotted on Gap South Trail in Troy, New Hampshire, United States. A wooded area with a lot of ferns & wetlands. Approx. 1300' above sea level.

Beautiful!! I think it really looks like a white admiral (red spotted purple), as you said... just look at the markings on the underside of the wings.
