Description:

Valerian is a hardy perennial flowering plant, with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers which bloom in the summer months.

Notes:

Valerian root has been demonstrated to possess sedative and anxiolytic effects.

The flowers look like lilac (syringa) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilac As hayde says, leaves would be useful for ID.
It looks a bit like thyme... Although its hard to tell without the leaves or stem. Did it smell like thyme?
