Field Notes

Description:

A tall carnivorous sundew with pink flowers held high above the sticky traps so as to not trap their own pollinators.

Habitat:

Dry sclerophyll bushland.

Notes:

Close-up showing a trapped fly. We get hundreds of these every Spring.

They form tubers to wait out the dry seasons. Ours come up in the Spring and flower mid-Summer. They prefer the south facing (away from the sun in the Southern Hemisphere) slopes. Australian soils are generally nitrogen poor, so capturing insects is one way of getting nitrogen.
wow, I've never seen a Drosera arranged that way....almost like individual little traps. ....and growing in a dry habitat.
