Field Notes

Description:

A small heron found throughout the Americas. They are often hiding, blending in with waterside vegetation using their cryptic coloration. This species is one of the few animals that use tools; it often drops small food items into the water to act as bait for fish. Once the fish swim close to surface within striking distance, the bird quickly grabs them with its long bill.
