Field Notes

Description:

I was trying to photograph a little bug and looks like I spotted a snake under the foliage.and a pile of dried oak leaves. Does it seem like a snake? The markings appear to be of one.I also see a tail tapering off. This was right next to the open space.
After I put up this spotting I did get feedback that it looked like a Black "Snake" from various people.
After a little more discussion and consulting a ranger.we came to the conclusion that it could be a mulch barrier.

Notes:

After a lot of discussion we have decided to keep this spotting for people coming across a similar situation.
Thanks to all!

Species ID Suggestions

Just a thought, but I wouldn't remove this spotting, if whomever runs this site is ok with it...there was a lot of people who thought it looked like a snake and it ultimately got identified otherwise, as cloth, but it is correctly identified now. Others are likely to make the same mistake.
maybe. You can always ask Dan Doucette to ID the plant.
Well ,so do i remove this spotting?
I was looking at this picture for the bug..then finished reading the caption...then saw the "snake" and recognized it as the same 'snake" I had in my yard last month. I did pull back quickly in my yard until I realized it wasn't moving at all. :-)
I think you guys nailed it on the mulch barrier. Sure does look like a snake at first glance though. Keep those powers of observation sharp Emma, it's the mark of a great naturalist.
Heather ,that truly makes sense. Though there are snakes around here they are very elusive.
If it's not a snake, could it bee that mulch/weed barrier called Weedbloc? It looks like a snake I had in my yard that ended up being a rolled up piece of this weedbloc fabric. It's a better picture if it's a snake though.
Hi Mitch, help appreciated on this one!!
IIguess we would have to wait till he sees this . Till then .....
Lol I think MitchRay would know for sure!
i would guess and say black snake, but Im not sure? I would have to see the shape of its head, if it is round then it is not a poison snake and a rattler has a pattern on its back.
Yup!! and that is what I was going to do next!! I never for once expected myself to be doing a spontaneous spoyying on a snake.!! Calling out for Mitch Ray!!
That is very interesting to know p.young!! Would you be able to guess the species based on what is visible? Thanks again !!
I think that it looks like a juvenile rattle snake. It was very warm today and they do like warmth.
Ive had snakes in the garden for years. They are good because they eat rodents!
It looks docile! It was afraid of you. Was it in your garden?
This really shook me up!! Unexpected and was not looking for one!
Cool Photo! Looks like a snake! A blacksnake?
