Field Notes

Description:

Out after the rain yesterday. Quite a large snail (3-5 cm) with a light brownish shell with brown colour bands, 5-6 whorls, a large aperture and a white aperture margin.

Habitat:

Found over most of Europe with a few exceptions (see Wikipedia). Forests and open habitats; prefers humidity and cool temperatures.

Notes:

Frequently farmed and used in French cooking. As kids we would pick them up after the rain and sell them to restaurants.
