Field Notes

Description:

This is the largest of the parrotfish species. They are commonly seen in great shoals cruising along the coral reefs at shallow to intermediate depths. On the reefs they have an important functionality as bioeroders as they feed upon coral polyps and algae that grows on coral. They are gentle giants and often let divers come very close - for some reason they remind me of underwater cows.
