Southern wood ant (nest)
Formica rufa
59.8333, 10.4372
Field Notes
Description:
The southern wood ant or horse ant belongs to the group of ants that can dispense formic acid as a defence mechanism (which is why they are called peeing-ants in Norwegian).
Their nests or ant hills are commonly found on the southern side of trees, and popular belief is that they can be used as a navigational tool if lost in the forest.
