Field Notes

Description:

This small, thin, nocturnal and mildly venomous snake was 12 inches long. Despite being venomous, it's not really harmful to humans. This snake is brown with darker brown patches on the back and sides. The markings at the base of the head are a darker brown. Coloration varies depending on the substrate they're typically in. The eyes are yellow-brown with elliptical pupils which are for great for seeing at night.

Habitat:

Under a watering can in our backyard garden surrounded by oak woodland and chaparral. This snake is nocturnal and was resting when I uncovered it.

Notes:

This is the second specimen I've seen of this species. The first time was captured in another spotting which has a slightly different coloration and the eyes are not as dilated being in the sun: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1990806460
