These birds came out at dawn, on the lawns in front of the houses. They looked really funny with the long legs and looking like they were wearing jackets and caps.

Thanks Lori! There were many on Magnetic Island, they just came from nowhere before sunset. I do hope their numbers will grow everywhere, they are so cute.
It's a Threatened species in some parts of its range. Which might be why yours appears to be wearing a leg band.
