Field Notes

Description:

While they look much like a double-crested cormorant, water turkeys have a long, pointed bill and longer tail feathers and are typically spotted alone--not in groups like cormorants. Females typically have brownish neck feathers.

Habitat:

fresh or brackish water in subtropical climate.

Notes:

A water turkey's feathers aren't waterproof, so they dry them in the sun after a swim. That's the best way to spot them.
