Field Notes

Description:

A recently hatched caterpillar of the Vapourer moth in the family Lymantriidae.

Habitat:

Native to Europe, mostly in suburban habitats.

Notes:

The female only has vestigial wings and is flightless while the male flies mostly during the day. Feeds on a wide range of broad leaved trees and shrubs. This one was feeding on a rose bush in my garden - left in peace!
