Field Notes

Description:

The male of this sparrow-sized bird has varying levels of red on his neck, head and breast, especially during the breeding season. Females are a duller brown color, usually with heavily streaked sides and breast. Adults have a long tail, square-tipped tail.

Habitat:

These birds have been expanding their range over much of the US and southern North America. In the west, they prefer semi-open country; in the east they tend to live in urban and suburban areas.

Notes:

Yesterday, when this photo was taken, the temperature here (east central Minnesota) was 103, a high for the nation, I believe. The birds were really active around the bird bath on this hot day.

Thanks Ashley. They are actually very pretty birds; at least here in Minnesota they'd be considered quite colorful...grin.
