Alice, this is certainly a "tuffy"! I searched and the best I can come up with is a Yellow Blackberry Lily (Belamcanda chinensis) Here's a link - seems to have the same flower & leaf (like that of an iris). But, I am not 100% sure of the bud. See what you think!!
