If it has Long spike-like thorns and a small (usually white) trumpet shaped flower in the center of purple flower bracts, then it is probably a species of bougainvillea. It is a common houshold landscaping plant usually placed under groundlevel windows to prevent burglaries because it' has sharp thorns that often cause infections.
Janeen, I am sorry, I don't know about the flowers.
Does it have spikes and small white flowers inside the purple ones?
