Field Notes

Description:

Discovered under a rotting log being harassed by an ant. This larva has a large red head with reddish-brown plates behind. Abdomen is long and slender with dark banding. Three pair of long, orange legs. Two "tails" extend from the end of the abdomen above as well as an additional appendage (perhaps for breathing?) from the base of the abdomen. Long hairs can be seen on the abdomen and off the tails.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Cedar Point County Park, NY.
