Field Notes

Description:

Irridescent green with black spots. Impossible to forget, once seen. Instantly recognizable.

Habitat:

Flying around in a confused manner in my neighbour's compound. It sat on the wall, then the gate, then on a cycle parked nearby and finally on the cyclist's shirt before flying away. Very restless...all I got was this shot and a blurry one! I saw it in my garden today (21/8/2014)...but a glimpse was all I got.

Notes:

These bugs were very common about 25 years back...relatively rare now. The colourful cuticle used to be cut into tiny pieces and stuck on , between the eyebrows, (a bindi) by girls of a previous generation...now we have suede patches and the dwindling population is safer!
Kanch means glass or mirror and poka is generic term for insects in Bangla.
