Great-tailed Grackle (female)
Quiscalus mexicanus
29.7549, -110.494
Field Notes
Description:
Slender. Medium-size. female is brown. The male is glossy, iridescent black. Bold and sassy.
Habitat:
The grounds of the hotel I stayed in; heart of the city. The hotel had lovely grounds with water fountains and swimming pools where the birds drank/bathed. Lots of hedges, tall trees and nooks. The cut fruits and sugar sachets at the open air breakfast table were also magnets for these opportunistic birds that seem to fill the niche crows fill in my city.
Notes:
Very loud, shrill, somewhat musical cries. Mexican folklore says they have seven types of calls... Seven Passions (Love, Hate, Fear, Courage, Joy, Sadness, and Anger). read more on Wikipedia.
I had NO trouble recognizing this LIFER because I had seen it earlier on PN!
