Description:
Wild turkeys are native to North America. They are the largest members of the Galliformes. Males, called toms, are much larger than females, called hens. Hatchling turkeys are called poults.
Habitat:
Merriam's wild turkey is found in Ponderosa pine forests in the Rocky Mountains and adjacent areas on the plains. Their diets include nuts, seeds, berries, and insects; they may also occasionally eat small lizards and snakes.
Notes:
The turkeys in the picture are hens. They were found in Ponderosa pine forest understory near the Fall River entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.
