Field Notes

Description:

With a leg span of about 6 mm approximately, this little spider was hard to detect amongst the fluffy mimosa flowers. The thorax was green as were the two hind legs. The two front legs were a dark brown. The abdomen had a large dark patch with two small white patches on either side of the midline.
Palps were large and green.

Habitat:

Mimosa wattle in a nature reserve.

Notes:

Arthropods out at last ! they are slowly emerging as the weather warms up... I am not able to find out a specific name for this one. Judging form the size of the palps, this one could be a male.

These spiders are daytime ambush hunters. The interesting thing about this subfamily is the spiders have eight eyes in two rows of four. Each eye is situated on a knob and can be rotated independently.

Family: THOMISIDAE
Subfamily : Thomisinae

Thanks Lisa. The mimosa are all in bloom and there's a faint lovely fragrance about.
