Field Notes

Description:

Large adult male.

Habitat:

Upland forest near a wooded, fishless pond.

Notes:

This is a member of the Amybystomatidae (Mole Salamander) family. I found this individual under a cover object while conducting a herpetological survey in Western Tennessee.

What is unusual about this particular salamander is that since it is a burrower, it generally isn't found in acidic soils like those in an area with pine trees. But I was very happy to find this one in a stand of White Pines (Pinus strobus) next an Oak-Hickory mixed mesic forest.
