Description:

Wingspan approx. 1.75-2" wings clear to smokey-brown. dark brown veins. Body length approx 1.5" with a single tail filament approx. 5.5-6". A lot of yellow/orange on the head & thorax while the abdomen appeared mostly black or very dark brown. Reference http://bugguide.net/node/view/310153

Habitat:

Spotted on the house. A lot of wet lands, deciduous & evergreen forests, pastures & fields, in this area.

It's huge! As a result, I'd suggest searching the giant ichneumon wasps for an ID. It might be Megarhyssa macrurus based upon your description and the size, but start looking here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/4158/bgimage?from=0
