Description:
Mule deer are found in western North America. Their name comes from their large, mule-size ears. Males, called bucks, have antlers which are shed and regrown each year. Females, called does, do not have antlers.
Habitat:
Mule deer live in and in areas adjacent to coniferous and deciduous forests. They browse on a variety of shrubs and trees during summer; in snow-covered areas they browse on confers in winter.
Notes:
Mountain lions are major predators of adult deer in Colorado. Humans should assume that there may be mountain lions in areas where mule deer are found.
