Thanks for the information and helping identify it.
Based upon your description of it being large, the location you spotted it, I'd suggest this is one of the carpenter ants (Camponotus). It appears to have the domed thorax and partially hidden there may be a single node on the petiole ("waist") of the ant--both point to a carpenter ant.
