Description:
The Alpine Heath is small European butterfly in the family Nymphalidae,
found mostly at altitudes between between 1,400 and 2,400 meters. Its distribution is restricted to the Massif Central, Alps and northern Balkans. There is one generation per year, and the larvae feed on various types of grasses (Gramineae). See notes for identification.
Habitat:
Alpine meadow, alt. 1800m ASL. The last shot shows the habitat.
Notes:
This butterfly is very similar to Coenonympha darwiniana, but the latter is more orange than greyish-brown on the hindwing, and its distribution is very restricted. See more details here: http://www.eurobutterflies.com/species_pages/darwiniana.htm
