Field Notes

Description:

This ant has a black head and abdomen with a red thorax. This particular ant was about 7 mm long.The rounded thorax has a single node. The petiole (the "waist") has a single node as well.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest. This ant nests in standing and down timber.

Notes:

These ants were "farming" aphids. See the last photograph.
