Wheel bug

Arilus cristatus

Comments (1)

A wheel bug nymph. When it reaches adulthood, it will grow to a little over an inch long: one of the largest true bugs in North America (and the largest terrestrial true bug). It will also get its defining feature (and namesake): a cog-like projection of its pronotum. The nymphs don't have it, so they look tame in comparison. Watch out for its bite, it can hurt pretty badly.
