Field Notes

Description:

Large and imposing brown raptor, almost the size of a smaller eagles, with a distinctively rufous tail (well seen in pic N° 3).

Habitat:

Seen close to border with Russia, in a very cold valley, surrounded by a very tall Caucasus mountain peaks, some of which reach over 5000m. Valley itself was on some 1900m of altitude, and is regularly beaten by harsh winds, and is composed of barren rocks, montane grasslands and coniferous or thorny-shrubs groves. Observed for a long time perching on that cliff (Pics N° 4 to 6); and then again on the river bank in the town periphery.
