Field Notes

Description:

Now here's a weird fly that I hadn't seen here before. It's called a Rust Fly of the Family Psilidae. Both the wings and the abdomen are bent just above the midline to make a tent-like appearance to the body. However, not all species in the Family have this characteristic. This one is 6 mm in length, red-brown and black with the wings darkened on the upper lateral edges. The larvae of these species are mostly phytophagous inside stems, tubers and roots. Most species are Holarctic and not so common in the Americas. This is probably a species of Chyliza. The 5th picture shows the wing venation. I included the last photo because it shows that where there should be mouthparts, there is only a hole. The adults must not feed.

Habitat:

Garden lights at night, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
