Field Notes

Description:

Curiously shaped fungi - when mature, resembling a floppy ear, in particular when older. Leathery on touch, red-brown above and grey underneath when older (photo 1, 4 & 5); thicker, and redder above when younger (pics 2 & 3).

Habitat:

Found on a dead branch of an elder tree in our garden - garden is bordering a meadow, used as a grazing area for now. It is on edges of a small town, and bordering a magnificent lowland oak forest.
