Description:
From a distance Stylantheca papillosa looks like an encrusting algae or sponge, but on closer examination you can see that the pore like structures covering the organism are not like a sponges pores. It has a calcareous skeleton. The pores are where it feeds from (gastrozooids) and has a highly developed defense mechanism.
Habitat:
Spotted in a tide pool at low tide at Tongue point Marine Sanctuary.
