Field Notes
Description:
A large butterfly with a wingspan of 2 1/2-4 inches. The upperside of the male is tan to orange with black scales on forewing veins. Females are tawny and are darker than males. The underside of hindwings have wide pale submarginal band and large silver spots.
Habitat:
Common in the eastern United States. Prefers moist places, including fields and open woodland.
