Description:

2 November 2013 is National Bison Day in the United States. The American bison, also known as the American buffalo, once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds. They nearly became extinct through commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and the introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle. Recently, their numbers have increased in a few national parks and reserves.

Habitat:

Rainy day at the North Carolina Zoo
