Field Notes

Description:

From a distance I thought it had kanji characters printed on the wings. About 30mm wingspan.

Habitat:

Found under a night light (at midday) in a local nature reserve.

Notes:

I would call this 'Pawprints moth'
The markings on these wings seem to be unusual but Ken Harris has one (of three) similar - http://morwellnp.pangaean.net/cgi-bin/show_species.cgi?find_this=Casbia… .
family: GEOMETRIDAE
subfamily: Ennominae
tribe: Caberini
Russell Best says "Tentative ID by Marilyn Hewish who added "Casbia spp are a trial. I'm going to ANIC in Canberra in April to sort them out for the second Ennominae MoV. This is almost certainly not C. farinalis which is plainer. It may be C. celidosema"
