Field Notes

Description:

Large semi-aquatic rodent, brown with rough-looking fur, white under the nose, black less-furry ears. Swims and dives when startled; hangs out on the drier banks of the marsh otherwise.

Habitat:

Freshwater marsh near the mouth of Beaver Creek on the central Oregon coast.

Notes:

They'd been forced to the deeper water next to the road since low rainfall has lowered the water level of the marsh, and allowed no more than a couple seconds to elapse after seeing me to dive deep out of sight in the brackish water.
