Field Notes

Description:

The pileated woodpecker is my favorite bird and get quite excited when I see it and can take it's picture. It is the largest woodpecker. The name comes from the Latin pileatus, which means "wearing a cap," referring to its cap. This spotting is a male pileated woodpecker because it has the red mustache.

Habitat:

This pileated woodpecker was spotted in our campground at Shenandoah Valley Campground in Verona, Virginia.
