Field Notes
Description:
The mantis or praying mantis, scientifically known as Mantodea Religiousa or Mantodea, is named for its prominent front legs, which are bent and held together at an angle that suggests the position of prayer.
They are about 2-1/2 inches long, green to tan, with wings and large brown eyes. Praying mantis eat a variety of insects, to include butterflies, bees and moths. An interesting fact about these bugs is that
the female often devours the male while mating.
Habitat:
Found primarily in meadows, on foliage and flowers.
