Description:

This ant-like bug has a black front and bright red back end. It has fur like a tarantula all over. Moves pretty fast, too. Can anyone help me find out what it is?

Habitat:

Hot, dry. Bastrop, Texas

Species ID Suggestions

I'd agree with bowhunter. This looks like a velvet ant (Mutillidae), also known as a cow-killer because of its extremely powerful sting. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/159/bgimage?from=0 for more information and a place to start your search if you want to narrow the ID.
