Field Notes

Description:

These are sparrow sized passerine birds, with a thick seed-eater bill. The adult male (Pic No 1) presents black eye-stripe bordered above and below by two bright yellow stripes; and black bib bordered by yellow below. There is a greenish band across the chest, and the belly is yellow. Above, it is mainly mottled brown. Female (pics 2 & 3) is mainly brown, looking like other buntings females.

Habitat:

Here, the couple seen foraging after the grass and flowers were cut (against my wishes...) on terraces in our garden. Located at outskirts of Dubrovnik, on lower slopes of Srdj mountain, the garden is terraced and covered in Mediterranean fruit trees and spontaneous vegetation. In spring, these terraces are overgrown in beautiful dense carpet of spontaneous Mediterranean herbs and melliferous flowers.
