Field Notes

Description:

The body weight of an adult raccoon varies considerably with habitat; it can range from 2 to 14 kilograms (4 to 30 lb), but is usually between 3.5 and 9 kilograms (8 and 20 lb).
Head to hindquarters, raccoons measure between 40 and 70 cm (16 and 28 in), not including the bushy tail which can measure between 20 and 40 cm (8 and 16 in), but is usually not much longer than 25 cm (10 in).

Habitat:

urban, edge of city

Notes:

I was brushing my teeth and heard commotion in the huge silver maple beside my house. I grabbed my headlamp and camera and spotted at least 3 racoons in the tree. This was the only one I could photograph. He was looking down at me.

cool that you are able to take at least a shot in the darkness
No, I used the flash on my camera too. My headlamp doesn't have a red light feature, but I still wouldn't have been able to capture all 3 of them. The tree is very tall and very bushy. Only at times could I see all of them. 2 of them stayed high in the tree. Thanks, yeah, I always have my headlamp nearby.
Was that shot just with your headlamp? I wonder if you used the red light feature on your headlamp and a red filter on the camera if you'd get the same shot but all 3 critters next time? Great shot though. I love that I'm not the only one with a headlamp by the door.
