Field Notes

Description:

This widow skimmer is approximately 2 inches long. Its wingspan is about 3 inches long. It is mainly black with vertical yellow stripes along its thorax and abdomen. The wings are half black, half clear with black stigma.

Habitat:

"The widow skimmer commonly inhabits areas surrounding ponds, marshes, lakes, pools and slow streams. Areas with plentiful vegetation are preferred, with the vegetation used as a perch. This species is also common far away from water in open country, meadows and roadsides" (Widescreen Arkive).

Notes:

Found in the garden after light rain.
