I would think they might have a map of the plantings if the horticulturist doesn't know. Give it a try.
Thanks, ceherzog; I took a look, and also at some other sites. It's difficult because none of them are precisely the same, but the closest I can see is E. flabelliformis, both because of the compactness and color of the flower, and the timing of the bloom; also the height of the tree and its complete lack of leaves in early June (though admittedly this is an odd year climatically). I wonder if the head groundskeeper at Stanford would know what they have.

Let me know if anyone is able to ID this species. The same tree is down here in San Diego and no one seems to know what it is!
That sounds like a very reasonable ID. Haven't pinned down the exact one, but it fits many of this tree's characteristics. I'll post the full tree pic, too. Thanks.
