Rock Hyrax
Procavia capensis
-0.409502, 36.1111
Field Notes
Description:
Like all hyraxes, it is a medium-sized (~4 kg) terrestrial mammal, superficially resembling a guinea pig with short ears and tail. The closest living relatives to hyraxes are the modern day elephants and sirenians (sea cows).
Rock Hyraxes make very loud and eerie calls. They can be quite unnerving to hear if you don't know what it is. It's surprising the call comes from this small animal.
Habitat:
savanna, rocks
Notes:
I spotted this hyrax down below on the rocks while on a viewpoint in Lake Nakuru national park.
