We came by a couple of hours later and she'd buried herself. You could see the top of her shell and her head. Came by another couple of hours later and she was gone. Given that there are pedestrians and bicyclists on the road, I'm hoping nobody moved her and she just wandered off herself.
Looks like she it making a nest for her eggs. Snapping turtles are one of the very little types of turtle that gard the nest. I love the pic.
