Field Notes

Description:

Red, peeling bark; short, rounded leaves; fuller shape near the top.

Habitat:

Growing on the side of a small hill in a dry area that drained down into a pond. Helen Putnam Regional Park

Notes:

I am not 100% sure on ID, because it somewhat resembles an Arbutus sp., which I also saw a lot of in California, but most of them had fruits on them by that time.
