Description:

This "spine" or "stinger" for lack of a better word was found in my cousins foot and had to be removed via surgery. Any ideas what it is or what it belongs to?

It happened on the beach in the sand near the ocean. It's about 1/4 - 1/2 inches long and sort of translucent but yellowish orange where the barbs are.
More information on the incident might help, was it in water?
