Field Notes

Description:

The cap surface was smooth and silky, the photo doesn't do it justice! it was like stroking a deer (assuming deers are smooth and silky)! It was growing on dead wood in a deciduous woodland area. According to the wikipedia article Deer Shield is an edible species. No spore print I'm afraid; the cap was about 10cm across and there was a smaller one growing out of sight, not fully open and about 5cm across http://www.ispotnature.org/node/440630
