Description:
This bird is characterised by its wailing call which can be heard in the night. During the day they are very well camouflaged with its white and brown patterned and striped colouring. They have a large yellow eye and long legs with large knees which is why they are often called the "thick-knee". They are very protective of their young.
Habitat:
Woodland and grasslands, also farms, golf courses, parks and open areas in urban areas.
Notes:
This spotting was from my TAFE campus at Alexandra Hills in QLD. These birds lived in the campus carpark gardens and have done so for many years. it was lovely to watch them every day I was there and these are only a few of hundreds of photos I have of them. Towards the end of the year they started nesting and I checked everyday for eggs and finally the little hatchlings which are just gorgeous!
