Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker
Dinopium benghalense
22.5726, 88.3639
Field Notes
Description:
Typical woodpecker shape with golden yellow wing coverts. The red head means it is a male.
Habitat:
This Kadamba tree (Neolamarckia cadamba) was planted by me about 30 years ago. After profusely flowering for many years, it is now dead. Coppersmith barbets nest in its soft wood and fungus grows. Today as I was leaving for work I was pleasantly surprised to see a woodpecker enlarge the barbet's hole. Maybe it will nest here this year.
Dead trees like this one are called SNAGs...nothing in nature is wasted. My flowering tree, now a snag will be a condominium for birds.
