http://www.eattheweeds.com/natal-plums-num-num/ Apparently the whole plant is poisonous, and it quickly kills dogs, except for the fruit. I am not sure if the fruit is okay for dogs, most likely not. AuntNance123, I am guessing your grandparents wanted you to stay away because of this.
I am alive after consuming them for at least my last 30 years... :) I enjoyed them during last 2 months treks here... but I am OK. :D
Oh Nancy... How I can believe in Your town these precious fruits are not consumed.....? Please through this link... http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Natal%20Plum.html You may send fruits to test lab.
No, Ashish, I've never tasted them at all. I remember my grandparents' hedge of them, but we were always told to stay away from the fruit (I guess for as much aesthetic reasons as for its undeserved reputation as poisonous.) http://www.eattheweeds.com/natal-plums-num-num/
Nancy have you tasted raw green fruits...?
